Mary Help of Christians Catholic School (MHOC) aims to create a safe, nurturing, and Christ-centered environment that fosters the development of each child's God-given talents. The school's mission is inspired by the commitment to "teach as Jesus did," ensuring that students grow into productive members of their families, the Catholic Church, and the wider community.
MHOC started as a small parish of about 10 families on July 1, 1989, initially celebrating Mass in parishioners' homes. In 1993, the Archdiocese of Miami acquired 11.4 acres in Parkland, leading to the completion of a multipurpose building that serves as the church, faith formation center, and parish offices in 1996. The establishment of a preschool program followed in 1999.
In the fall of 2001, MHOC opened a four-room portable school for kindergarten, welcoming 12 enthusiastic students and their parents. Mr. Bob Messina became the principal in 2002, bringing a vision for the school, two ferrets, a few snakes, an array of birds, and a passion for education. The school began as a small entity in a competitive educational landscape.
By the 2005-06 school year, the MHOC Education Center expanded to accommodate 282 students in grades K-6 on an adjacent 13.1-acre tract. The first 8th-grade class graduated in 2008, marking a significant milestone. As classroom space increased, including the addition of two science labs, enrollment continued to rise. The preschool program was relocated to the main campus, and Maria Hall, which serves as a cafetorium and houses creative arts classes and administrative offices, was completed in 2019.
The school has embraced technology in education, focusing on a STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) approach in the science lab. Students in grades 3-8 have access to 1:1 iPad tablets, while K-2 classes utilize shared iPad carts, with plans to expand the 1:1 initiative to these younger grades.
Mary Help of Christians Catholic School currently serves children aged 18 months through 8th grade, including six preschool classes and two classes for each grade K-8, with over 500 students enrolled.
Though the faces and facilities may have changed, the foundational dream of MHOC endures. The school takes pride in its modest beginnings and remains dedicated to fostering a small-school family atmosphere and community spirit as it continues to grow and evolve.
