Accelerated Math: 6th - 8th grade. Qualifying students have the opportunity to work ahead in the next grade level’s standards (i.e., 6th grade works in 7th grade)
Accelerated English Language Arts: 6th - 8th grade. Qualifying students have the opportunity to work at a faster pace with a focus on in-depth novel studies and project based learning.
Qualifying 7th & 8th grade students earn high school credit: Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors. Both classes offered on campus with an MHOC certified 6-12 math teacher.
Qualifying 7th & 8th graders may also earn Spanish I high school credit via an independent dual enrollment course. In addition, native Spanish speakers participate in a Spanish for Native Speakers course. With these differentiated options, students in the middle school Spanish courses enjoy targeted instruction and smaller class sizes.
Differentiated Instruction
Accelerated Reader. Based on STAR reading assessment scores (given three times per year) and individualized discussion with teachers, students work in Accelerated Reader to reach quarterly reading goals.
Mathletics. 1st - 4th grade. Students work in this engaging online math program designed to challenge and reward students based on their current level and progress.
IXL. 5th - 8th grade. Students enjoy a personalized learning experience through this online platform. Subjects include Math and ELA, and content is tailored based on each student’s needs.
WPP Online. 5th - 8th grade. Students strengthen their writing skills through this online program offering individualized pacing and feedback. A yearly Writing Assessment Program (WrAP) is administered each spring.
Middle School STREAM Elective Program Students select one yearlong and four quarterly electives from among a wide variety of topics including Choir, Art, Hydroponic Gardening, Painting, Computer Science, Robotics, Drama, Broadcast Media, and Debate…to name a few! STREAM electives vary from year to year but there are always a variety of engaging courses designed for your student to explore his/her God-given talents.
Competitions and Involvement Opportunities Opportunities to be Involved and Showcase Talents in School: Spelling Bee (2nd – 8th grades), National Junior Honor Society,Student Council, and STREAM Fair. Outside of School: Cardinal Gibbons Brain Brawl, FAU Science Olympiad, St. Thomas Aquinas Math Field Day and STEM Day, Scripps Spelling Bee, Broward County Science Fair JA Biztown (5th grade) and JA Finance Park (8th grade) provides students critical financial literacy skills and real-world, hands-on experience in the areas of economics, workplace experience, personal and business finance, and career exploration.
Student Support
In addition to the middle school STREAM program, K-5 students meet weekly with our dedicated STREAM teacher to participate in hands-on learning activities aligned with cross-curricular grade level standards.
Full-time Guidance Counselor and ESE staff support a variety of students' needs. Learning Interventionist meets 1:1 and in small groups with those students needing extra support.
Keyboarding (5th grade), Chromebook Skills (5th grade), and Study skills (6th grade) offer strong foundational support.
Facilities Brand new cafetorium opened in 2019 providing a beautiful performing arts space for our students and families as well as an indoor cafeteria for daily dining. Science/STREAM Innovation Labs: Two state-of-the-art labs where students engage in a hands-on approach to learning that provides opportunities to develop 21st century skills (real world problem solving, collaboration, time management, perseverance, and “thinking outside the box”). Beautiful large campus - Two preschool playgrounds including a sensory playground & garden, dedicated K-2 playground, Panther Park – outdoor lab & exploration!
Proven success TerraNova Assessments: Over half of MHOC students scored in the top quartile (75% or greater national percentile) on standardized assessments.
